Relational Engineering

The most important design problems rarely exist within individual products. They exist in the relationships between people, technology, information, environments and one another.

Rather than beginning with features or product categories, we begin by asking what relationship could work better. Where is the friction? What is unnecessarily difficult to understand, manage or do? What should become visible, and what can disappear entirely?

From there, we design the intervention the relationship requires. It may become software, an interface, a physical product or a system spanning all three.

The form is not the starting point. The relationship is.
